Billions Of Dollars In Damage

Hurricane Charley: Damage Billions of dollars in damage estimated

The final toll, in lives and property damage, may still grow -- but the numbers are becoming clearer, in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. Florida officials say the damage to insured homes in the state is estimated at anywhere from five billion to eleven billion dollars.

The figures for business losses, and for damage to cars and to uninsured homes, aren't yet available. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared 25 counties eligible for disaster aid. At least 13 people were killed by the storm in Florida, and thousands are homeless. In one county alone, 31 mobile-home parks suffered major damage -- including some that had more than a-thousand units.
