CARROLL TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ottawa County Sheriff says one person is dead and another is injured after a shooting near Oak Harbor Wednesday.

Sheriff Stephen Levorchick says the incident happened just before noon in a house at the intersection of Leutz Road and Fick Road in Carroll Township in Ottawa County. He says when officers arrived, they found Randy Ross, 47, outside, bleeding from gunshot wounds to the head. Inside the house, they found his wife, Amy, dead.

Levorchick says Ross forced his way into the home, chased Amy, 43, upstairs and fatally shot her in the chest. He then shot himself twice in the head, but managed to walk outside to the driveway.

Amy's sister, Andrea Swope, and 15-year-old niece, who live in the house, witnessed the shooting.

Amy was pronounced dead at the scene. Randy was treated at the scene and flown to a Toledo hospital in critical condition. No one else was reported injured.

The sheriff says the Fremont couple was married but going through a divorce. Amy Ross had recently moved out of the house she shared with Randy and the two had begun divorce proceedings. She was moving into the home of her sister on Leutz Road.

An investigation is ongoing.

The news is disturbing for Carroll Township.

"These individuals that were out here involved were well-known in the community," said Carroll Township Police Chief Jody Hartfeld. "It's going to hurt."

Amy's college roommate, Ginger Velliquette, said the incident should not have happened. She had tried to make plans for Amy to go to lunch with her earlier that morning.

"She was such a sweet girl," said Ginger Velliquette, Amy's college roommate. "She had trouble in the past and went back. If anything is good out of this, I want to tell all girls who are experience domestic violence: Don't go back."

Back in April 2011 about two miles south of this incident on Leutz Road, a man named Alan Atwater shot and killed his wife, three children, and then himself. Atwater and his wife were having extreme marital problems, as well.
