Vigil held for murdered N. College Hill man

NORTH COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) -

A year ago Sunday, a man was shot to death in his car at a North College Hill apartment complex.

That case still hasn't been solved.

Sunday afternoon, family and friends of Steven Duke, Jr. gathered to remember him at the scene at Four Worlds Apartments.

"He was always like my hero.  He was born my cousin, but we were more like brother and sister, best friends," said Duke's cousin, Laguoria Boykins.

Songs, prayer, emotion and tears surrounded the vigil in the name of Duke.  A year ago, he was gunned down just below his mother's bedroom window in his car.

"It's very difficult.  Not just today, but every day.  My nieces, he was like a brother to them.  It's difficult for them every day.  There's not a day that tears aren't shed," said his aunt, Jennifer Edwards.

Just eight months before Duke was killed, his brother died in a car accident.  When Duke died, he left behind a now 4-year old daughter.

"It's just very emotional all the time just driving down the street, eating a certain meal, looking at his daughter, his daughter not understanding, her crying when she can't get her way, and screaming telling her daddy to come help and why did he leave her," added Boykins.

Family members say Duke had turned his life around, and was a good man willing to do anything for anyone.

"No one's perfect, and we're not trying to paint a perfect picture, but he was a protector.  There's different ones that I think everyone out here can tell you in some way that he protected them or stepped up to the plate and provided," added Edwards.

The family is still seeking closure, and they have one plea.

"We know there are individuals that are involved.  We just want the ones that have all other information to come forward," said Edwards.

"If you know something, say something," said Boykins.

Anyone with information about the death of Steven Duke, Jr. is asked to call Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.
