12 INVESTIGATES: Snack spending in Congress

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

While the rest of the country was bracing for the fiscal cliff and massive budget cuts, last fall, Congress was spending quite a bit of your money on snacks and bottled water.

12 Investigates dugs into a recently released audit of how Congress is spending your tax dollars in its offices.

In the last three months of 2012, the top congressional leadership spent nearly $30,000 on bottled water, coffee, and catering from restaurants and grocery stores.

The food was bought from upscale grocery stores, including Harris Teeter and Whole Foods, restaurants, like P.F. Chang's, and breakfast food and drink from Joe Ragan's Coffee and Dunkin Donuts.

Speaker of the House John Boehner spent the most - more than $11,000 on food and drink. More than $2,200 was just for coffee in October, November and December.

Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy spent more than $9,000 - including a $2,500 bill at Qdoba in October.

Minority leader Nancy Pelosi came in at $3,500.

Locally, Majority Leader Eric Cantor spent the least among leadership - just under $3,000 on food and drink over three months.

So, while Americans we're being told to prepare for tough budget cuts, the food, water and coffee budgets in Congress were still flowing.

None of the top leadership returned phone calls from several media outlets.

An investigative reporter for WUSA in Washington, D.C. was able to get a hold of Minority Whip Steny Hoyer's office. An aide said the money went towards breakfast meetings and lunch meetings, calling it common.

During those three months of spending, Congress was only in session for 35 days.
