ERIE COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Search crews went underwater Tuesday, looking for signs of two kayakers missing since the weekend. At this point, the search has transitioned from a rescue to a recovery mission.

The Erie County Sheriff Dive Team and the Ohio Division of Watercraft searched a large commercial fishing net in part of Sandusky Bay hoping to find any sign of Jonathan Francis, 30, of Sandusky, and his daughter Viola, 12.  Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth says the divers searched the submerged net but turned up nothing. The net covers about one square mile.

Francis's fiancée, Sheila McClain, reported the two missing early Sunday morning. The pair was last seen around 5 p.m. Saturday, kayaking near Crystal Rock. Officials say they had planned to paddle to the Edison Bridge and back before they disappeared.

"I'm very worried. They were only going to be on a trip for two hours and come back," McClain said Sunday.

That same day, the kayaks belonging to Francis and his daughter were found empty near South Lightner road in Ottawa County.

"I don't think they're there; because they found the kayaks. Now, if they had been floating with a kayak – but they're not," said McClain.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says that Tuesday afternoon, two boats took cadaver dogs out to look for the kayakers , and will continue to do so over the new few days as a part of regular, daily patrols.
