12 INVESTIGATES: Mo' Money Taxes in more trouble with the Justice Dept

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Mo' Money Taxes is in more trouble - The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Wednesday to shut down the company and its owners, claiming they victimized the public

"I'm a victim, just like the people. I'm waiting, just like they waiting," said Markey Granberry in 2012.

You may remember, hundreds of people in Virginia had huge problems getting their tax returns out of Mo' Money last year. They lined up, but checks bounced. Police in Norfolk even had to control crowds. There were two offices in Richmond; one on Belt Boulevard, the other on Hull Street.

"I asked them not to send my preparations off and they did. They actually tried to send it three times," said Shusonya Whitaker last year.

The federal lawsuit is 53 pages long. It's to stop Mo' Money and its owners from operating.

The indictment alleges the defendants ran a business that encouraged the preparation of fraudulent tax returns. Several people from Richmond were even interviewed by investigators with the Justice Department.

Rita Hunt told them she filed at the Mechanicsville office. She says she was told to claim her grandchildren, even though they didn't live with her.

The government estimates it lost a minimum of $9 million in fraudulent returns prepared by the company in 2011.

No court date has been set. In the past, Mo Money's owner, Markey Granberry, has denied any wrong doing. The phone number listed on the company's website has been disconnected. The company is operating right now under the name Marquis Taxes.
