New details released in crash that killed 3 IN teens

RIPLEY COUNTY, IN (FOX19) -

New details were released Thursday in a crash that killed three teens in Ripley County, Ind. last month.

According to a report from Indiana State Police, the 17-year-old driver of the white Dodge pick up truck, and Timothy "Curtis" Bowman, the driver of the red Ford pick up truck who was killed, ran the intersection of CR 850W and Fairground Road.

Two of the passengers in Dodge truck, Kayla Adkinson and Caleb Cumberworth, reported that the 17-year-old sped up intentionally to run the stop sign and get through the intersection before Bowman.

All of the students were leaving an FFA meeting at Hopewell Baptist Church.

The driver of the Dodge truck, Cumberworth, Adkinson and the fourth passenger, Samantha Hansen, all left the meeting to go get more drinks. The teacher told them, "Drive carefully."

Bowman had asked the teacher if he could leave to get gas and his 4-wheeler, but the teacher said no. When the teacher left, another student told Bowman he could leave and he would cover for him.

According to the report, there were no tire marks that would indicated pre-collision braking.

The driver of the Dodge was not aware that Bowman was leaving the church at the same time.

A Versailles Police Department officer said he had pulled the juvenile over two or three weeks prior to the crash for going 85 miles per hour in a 55.

Bowman, 17, of Osgood, Indiana; Henson, 18, of Holton, and Jacob Vogel, 18, a passenger in Bowman's truck, all died in the crash. All were wearing their seat belts.
