Hamilton Police have identified a robbery suspect who was shot dead during a robbery attempt in Hamilton.
It happened Saturday evening at Mazagan Urban Ware on Main Street.
Police say Jeremy Scott Irwin, 26, of Fairfield, was found lying outside the store with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he died.
According to a police report, Irwin entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The owner's wife, who was working the register, screamed and handed over the register.
The owner, Smail Gueddari, heard his wife's screams and came into the store area from the back.
Irwin fired a shot inside the store, striking a mannequin.
Gueddari fired two shots, one of which struck Irwin.
Gueddari's 2-year-old son was also in the store at the time.
"I didn't want to kill him, but I had to protect my wife and son," said Gueddari.
Gueddari said Irwin was a regular customer at the store.
A Hamilton woman saw the aftermath.
"We were headed over the bridge to grab a few things from our apartment, we're in the process of a move, and saw a man laying on the ground over here and we just assumed a fight, he was intoxicated, something like that," said Sarah Moon-Sapp of Hamilton.
Moon-Sapp says though it's an unfortunate circumstance, she is surprised something like this did happen.
"We didn't imagine that was at all what happened. We just thought, you know, an accident or a fight, something got out of hand. It was pretty crazy," Moon-Sapp added.
But for one man who spends several days a week working at Tom's First Ward Cigar Store just down the block from Mazagan Urban Ware, he sees it a little differently, especially working at a place that's been held up before.
"This isn't anything new. Somebody getting shot and killed nearby is new, but as far as everything goes, the neighborhood's not been so good. We've been robbed two or three times within the past year. One time was at gunpoint," said William Young, a clerk at Tom's First Ward Cigar Store.
After all of this, Young says it is unnerving, and now he's left to think about how he's going to protect himself.
"We don't serve open container so we could have a firearm if we wanted to. As long as the owner was okay with it I'm thinking I might do that soon," added Young.
The store was closed on Sunday, but reopened on Monday.
Police say there are no charges planned as of now. The Butler County Coroner's Office is investigating the death.
