Underage Drinking

Nickelodeon, industry group launch program against underage drinking

A new program aimed at stopping underage drinking is being launched by the Nickelodeon children's TV channel and an organization funded by distillers. Experts say the most influential people children look to for guidance are their own parents. And parenting expert Anthony Wolf says honesty is vital, especially when a child asks their parents why they drink. Susan Molinari is chairman of the distillers group called the Century Council. She says the new program, called "Ask, Listen, Learn," gives parents tips in how to handle the alcohol issues, and information aimed at children. Molinari says 65 percent of adolescents surveyed say their parents have the most influence on their decision to drink or not. The council says 54 percent of adolescents say they have tried alcohol by the time they reach the eighth grade.
