Off-duty deputy shoots accused robber in Point Place

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A man will be charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary upon his release from an area hospital. Toledo police say 18-year-old Andrew Short was shot by off-duty Lucas County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Hannon in Point Place after an attempted robbery.

Police say around 1 a.m. on 119th Street, Hannon let out his dog and was standing in a garage doorway when he noticed two people on foot in front of his house, as well as two unfamiliar cars parked out front.

Hannon says he put his weapon in his back pocket, preparing for what could come next.

"[Hannon] walked back up to the open garage door, and the suspect almost immediately pulled down a mask over his face, pointed a gun at him, and said, 'Give me everything that you've got,'" said Lt. Mark King.

According to Hannon, he pulled out his gun and warned Short he was a sheriff's deputy.

"He identified himself as a sheriff's deputy several times, and told the guy to drop the gun. He refused, so he fired one round at him," said King.

Short took off running and hopped into one of the getaway cars, while Hannon ran into his garage to take cover. The accomplices took Short to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The other car was pulled over moments later by Toledo police, and suspects inside admitted they had been planning to rob homes in the area.

"While they were casing the residences, they happen to see the gentleman standing there. Apparently, Short decided, 'I'm gonna go rob this guy.' But he didn't realize, obviously, he's an off-duty deputy sheriff, and he got more than he bargained for," said King.

Police arrested six accomplices and charged them with conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, as well.

The incident is under investigation. The deputy is not on administrative leave at this time because the sheriff believes his actions were justified.
