Local Red Cross helps Midwest flooding victims

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Cincinnati area chapter of the American Red Cross traveled across the Midwest to help with recent flooding.

Hundreds of people were forced to sleep in community shelters throughout Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin where flooding caused heavy damage. Officials say heavy rainfall left many without power.

The Cincinnati chapter sent three volunteers to Peoria, Illinois, to assist in providing hot meals to those affected.

"We are prepared and ready to send more volunteers to Illinois in a moment's notice," said Trish Smitson, CEO for the Cincinnati Area Chapter. "It's times like this that we all pull together and show how the Red Cross helps our neighbors across the country in need."

Officials say they are prepared to send more volunteers from the Tri-State as needed.
