MIAMI TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Fire Department Bomb Squad was called to a report of a suspicious item in Miami Township on Monday.
Authorities say a homeowner found a black, cylindrical shaped item while mowing the lawn in the 1200 block of Queenie Lane. They then picked it up and moved it to the driveway, before calling police saying it looked suspicious. It happened around 2:30 p.m.
Police say the device was about 1.5 - 2'' in diameter, 'heavy like it was packed with something' and had holes in each end.
Upon arrival of Miami Township firefighters, several nearby homes were evacuated, a perimeter was established around the area and the Cincinnati Bomb Squad was called.
According to authorities, the bomb squad used a robot to take a closer look at the unknown item. It was then determined to be a commercially manufactured part, possibly for a car.
"We have always exercised caution when dealing with a reported suspicious device," said Chief Jim Whitworth. "But with recent events, the public and responders are even more sensitive to the potential for a devastating event. This turned out to be a good practical exercise for approaching a suspicious situation, and a confirmation of the importance for having the capability to respond to these situations in the region."
