Local communities participating in drug take-back

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Various communities around the Tristate will be taking part in the Drug Enforcement Administration's prescription drug take-back day on Saturday.

The event allows residents who have accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

More than 30 communities in the Tristate area plan on participating in the national event. For a list of local sites, visit http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In the last couple of years, the DEA has collected more than 2 million pounds (1,018 tons) of prescription medications during Take-Back collection days. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.  It also provides an educational opportunity to health care providers, patients, parents and youth about the dangers of prescription drug abuse/misuse.
