Security changes impacting what you can bring to Oaks and Derby

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Churchill Downs officials want to remind you as much as possible about how the security changes are impacting what you cannot bring to the 2013 Oaks and Derby. Churchill officials have been planning the first weekend in May now for 139 years. They realize recent tragedies have changed the way they plan the historic event.

"With the happenings of last week, we've looked at how people get into the facility to make sure they get in as quickly and safely as possible," said Churchill Downs Racetrack President, Kevin Flanery.

That affects what you can and can't take in this year. You can not bring in coolers, cans, glass bottles or containers.

"I think it's a good thing," said Bryan Cassis. "The Derby is going to be a highly publicized event it could be a target. So, I think additional security is appropriate."

The infield, which is always a hot spot for those who like to enjoy Oaks and Derby on the wild side, will not allow tents this year.

"I've done the infield and sometimes the tents are nice but, you know that seems to be one of the things that if we can make the Derby experience safer you might just have to give up a little of that," said Cassis.

If you want to capture the moment, leave your camcorder and camera with detachable lens or a lens more than six inches at home, along with your tripod.

Purses larger than 12 inches in any dimension may go with your outfit, but they will not be allowed inside.

For those who are going to Oaks and Derby this year, they said it's a small concession for what the experience has to offer.

"Everything that anyone needs to have fun at the Derby, they provide to you," said Cassis. "I don't think it's going to be one bit of a problem."

Styrofoam coolers and ice are available for purchase at the track and track officials said those items will not be overpriced.

If you bring the prohibited items, you will be required to take them back to your car. Churchill officials are trying to figure out a way to donate the discarded items to charity.
