KDF officials examining security for Pegasus Parade

The Pegasus Parade will take place on May 2, 2013. The Pegasus Parade will take place on May 2, 2013.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - With Boston fresh in people's minds, all eyes turn to Louisville with the Kentucky Derby and the many events that lead up to it, including the Pegasus Parade.

Kentucky Derby Festival officials said in the past few years, tickets has actually been their main security concern for the parade.

The Republic Bank Pegasus Parade lasts for hours as the floats and people make their way down Broadway.

"Between 80 and 100 units who will be in the parade. It starts at 5 p.m. and takes a couple of hours," said Aimee Boyd with Kentucky Derby Festival.

More attractions means more attendance.

"We've had upwards of 300,000 folks who've come down Broadway especially when we have really good weather," Boyd said.

And with so many people packing Broadway, extra police officers from dozens of agencies join the crowd to keep things safe.

"LMPD to state and federal officials, even homeland security," she said.

But don't expect specifics about the steps they'll take to keep things going smoothly.

"We can't reveal all our cards and let you know everything that we are doing because then it wouldn't be secure. Just because you don't see the police officer or the canine units right there in front of you doesn't mean that they haven't been there or that there is not a presence there," Boyd said.

The security plan is still evolving and can change day by day. Officials will release any new details as the parade gets closer.

Tickets are required if you plan to watch the parade from the bleachers that have been set up along Broadway. They range from $9 to $11 and 10,000 tickets were printed for the event.

Officials also released some of the celebrities who will be in the parade. They include:

  • UofL Men's and Woman's basketball teams plus Ladybirds and mascots
  • Big Brother cast members Wil Heuser, Frank Eudy, Mike "Boogie" Malin, Ashley Iocco and Janelle Pierzina
  • Miss Kentucky 2012 - Jessica Casebolt
  • Miss America 2013 - Mallory Hagan
  • Angel McCoughtry - Olympic gold medalist/WNBA basketball star
  • J. D. Shelburne - country music artist
  • Ashley Holt - Next Great Baker
  • Gunnar Deatherage & Alicia Hardesty - Project Runway

The parade will be broadcast live exclusively on WAVE 3. Coverage starts Thursday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m.
