Duke Energy Ohio rate increase approved

Thousands of Duke Energy Ohio customers will be paying more on their monthly bills.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved Duke's 2.9% rate hike for electric distribution on Wednesday, affecting nearly 610,000 customers.

The electric hike totals $49 million. A separate case related to natural gas distribution rates is still pending.

Duke officials say on average, the increase will cost consumers an extra $3.72 per month.

The hike was introduced to help pay for Duke's rising costs of service.
