Suggestive billboard stirs up controversy

NAUGATUCK, CT (WFSB) -

A billboard in Naugatuck is causing quite a stir between those who find the advertising witty and those who find it offensive.

Eyewitness News reporter Matthew Campbell was on your side Thursday night with the story behind the ad.

The billboard is up in two spots, Route 8 in Waterbury and on Water Street in Naugatuck. Looking closer, you can see the local business based on Rubber Avenue specializes in flooring and carpeting; those in the industry get it.

"I can see a little dirty point on it, but at the same time being in the construction trade, you're covering a floor and it has layers and stuff like that," Todd Mills, of Naugatuck, said.

But others are finding a hard time putting the visual message into words, especially when younger ones are asking.

Ron Boulanger saw the latest ad from Valley Floor Covering two weeks ago and it immediately got under his skin.

"Whoever came up with that marketing strategy has no class as far as I'm concerned," Boulanger said. "People are being desensitized to smut and stuff that goes on in the world today."

We wanted to go to the source, Valley Flooring, to explain their ad. We called multiple times, even visited the store, trying to get in touch with the owners. They had no comment, choosing instead to bask in the publicity this ad's getting.
