Jessica faces her fear of needles

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - We've been talking about facing your fears all week but there is a difference between a fear and a phobia.

It's normal to feel a little queasy when getting a shot.

But you might have a phobia if you avoid medical treatment because you're terrified of needles.

FOX19's Jessica Brown has feared needles since she was a kid. Instead of avoiding the pain, she faced her fear at the Hoxworth Blood Center.

Hoxworth's Community Relations Manager Alecia Lipton says Jessica's fear is all in her head, "It's mind over matter and just tell yourself, 'yes you can do this and you're saving a life.'"

Jessica did a little research before taking the plunge by talking to donors about the experience.

After the application process came the finger prick to see if she was a good candidate.

Jessica said that at first came anxiety, then a long game of tug of war where her photographer tried to keep her distracted.

After the finger prick was quick and surprisingly painless, Jessica says she was pumped and ready for the bigger needle. That's until she made the mistake of looking at it.

After about 15 minutes, Jessica was able to try to give. Not much came out because she was too tense but she's proud she faced her fear head on!
