CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - For Jean Schmidt, the Flying Marathon was about more than setting a personal best. It was about overcoming the fear many American have felt since the Boston Marathon bombings.
With her daughter at her side, Jean Schmidt achieved her best time in years at the Flying Pig.
"We've planned this a year ago and we've been training together," explains Schmidt. "[Emilie] pushed me the whole way. She's an incredible runner and this is the fastest that I have done in the past 10 years."
Schmidt attributes much of her success to Boston.
"All of the anger and all of the pain I have had since Boston, I have poured out on this course," Schmidt told FOX19. "It's hopefully closure for me because I so needed to [run] again for those wonderful people in Boston."
So what was going through Jean Schmidt's mind as she ran her 100th marathon? Schmidt tells FOX19 that one song pushed her to the finish.
"I'm not a Neil Diamond fan at all, but I have fallen in love with the song Sweet Caroline. I absolutely love it and sang it the whole way because it means so much to Boston. Because it means so much to Boston, it means so much to me."
A Cincinnati native, Schmidt felt pride for her hometown following the Flying Pig.
