INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) -

A local Marine is a finalist in Crown Royal's annual 'Your Hero's Name Here' program.

Every year the whisky brand Crown Royal awards one deserving hero the naming rights of NASCAR's Brickyard 400.

The race is July 28 in Indianapolis, and honors those in the military, firefighters, police officers and first responders.

Samuel Deeds is a retired Marine from Independence, Ky. During his deployment to Iraq in 2005, he came across an improvised explosive device (IED). When he saw two of his fellow marines nearing the area, he exposed himself to the IED to warn them.

As a result, Deeds was severely injured in the bast and has undergone more than 30 surgeries since then. For his selfless actions, he has received several awards, including a Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart.

Deeds was nominated and chosen as one of the five finalists to have the race named in his honor. Should he win the grand prize, the Brickyard 400 would be renamed the 'Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard'.

Adult consumers can vote for the hero they believe is most deserving at CrownRoyalHeroes.com. Voting runs through June 9 and the grand prize winner will be announced later that month.
