GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

An 88-year-old Gaston County man has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he is accused of shooting his 80-year-old female roommate in the chest, killing her.

According to Gaston County police, officers were called to the 100-block of Venn Drive in Gastonia around 12:22 p.m. on Sunday to the report of a woman in cardiac arrest. This is the Venn Trailer Park.

When officers arrived they found Vivian Schronce, 80, inside a home suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. She was rushed to Caromont Regional Medical Center.

The 80-year-old didn't survive and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

During the investigation, police identified 88-year-old Charles Edwin Venn as the shooter. Venn used to own the Venn Trailer Park, but it now belongs to his son.

Venn appeared before a judge on Monday in a Gaston County courtroom.

He was given a public defender and ordered to undergo a psych evaluation. He is set to have a probable cause hearing on June 3.

According to the Gaston County Clerk of Court, Venn seemed very confused in court and didn't seem to understand what was going on.

The news of the murder in the Venn Trailer Park spread fast among Gaston County residents.

"It just surprised us," neighbor Laura Smith said.

Smith says Venn was a seemingly nice guy and would help out tenants when he could.

"She's just always been one to take care of everybody," Schronce's granddaughter, Amber Lewis, said. "I've never met [Venn], they've apparently been living down there for six years."

Lewis says the shooting death of her grandmother still hasn't sunk in. She says she heard Venn had a temper and a drinking problem, but didn't say much more than that about a possible motive.

"We want justice - that's all we want," Lewis said.

Charles Venn is being held at the Gaston County Jail without bond.

Anyone with information about the shooting of Vivian Schronce is asked to contact the Gaston County Police Department at (704) 866-3320.
