Toledo Police log on to social media

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Police Department has been perpetually heightening its influence with more officers on the street, motorcycle patrols and even police cameras.

But now, in an effort to reach the more technologically savvy civilians, TPD is moving their focus to the Web, with a huge boost in social media efforts.

As Toledo Police look to make their department smarter, faster, and stronger in every area, they say logging on and sharing info with "friends" is a good place to start.

"It's going to serve many different purposes," said Sgt. Kevin Braun. "We're going to put critical information out to the public. So if we're looking for a suspect, or we need information on a certain crime wave or anything like that, we'll put it out to our followers, and hopefully they can help us."

Sgt. Braun is one of the faces behind the tweets and posts. He says it's a way for the department to get personal with the community.

So far over a thousand people have liked what the department is doing with their Facebook page. Sgt. Braun says he hopes as the numbers grow, so will the conversations between the department and followers.

"Hopefully it can be a two-way communication…we can give the public things they need, they can give us things back. I think it's sort of, in a way, digital community policing."
