NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville resident will serve 13 months in prison for filing false tax returns.

James Robert Sanford, 53, formerly of Clarksville, TN, was sentenced Monday in federal court.

He pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns on Jan. 14, 2013, and admitted that for tax years 2006 and 2007 he had prepared and filed false income tax returns on behalf of himself and his spouse.

Sanford also said he assisted 18 others in preparing and filing 26 income tax returns, which fraudulently claimed tax refunds.

In addition to prison, Sanford was also ordered to pay $78,822 in restitution to the federal government.
