Club Blaze's license revoked by the Montgomery City Council

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery City Council snuffed out the last of the controversy surrounding Club Blaze during Tuesday's meeting by revoking its business license.

The business was in city councilman C.C. Calhoun's district, but he's called it a headache for him and the area since it opened two years ago as Quarles Barbecue. In August 2012 the name changed to Blaze Bar and Grill without the city council's knowledge.

Was it a restaurant or a nightclub? That was the question before the business's owner during the May 7 council meeting.

"You're bringing in food from Lowdnes County and saying your operating a restaurant," Calhoun explained at the May 7 meeting. "That's not a legit restaurant. And when I look at the numbers. $300,000 in cover charges, I don't know any restaurant that charges a coverage charge. And then on some of the charges, there is no food and just alcohol. They are operating a club and that's something that's not going to be tolerated in my district or the city of Montgomery."

Residents have complained saying there have been flyers in the surrounding neighborhoods promoting live entertainment and ladies night at Club Blaze.

Some council members pushed during that meeting to temporarily shutdown the bar and grill for two weeks until it could operate within a restaurant business license of 60 percent food and 40 percent liquor.

During the period between May 7 and Tuesday, owners were given time to install a full kitchen where cooks could actually prepare food and to create an actual menu. There was also the issue of making a payment toward the $30 to $40 thousand dollars in back-taxes council members say the owners owe the city.

When the two weeks were up, the Council voted 8-0 to pull the license. Councilman Burkett abstained. The revocation was effective immediately.
