ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) -

The Andalusia City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve an increase in the city's sales tax by 1.5 percent.

The increase will bring the city's total sales tax to 9.5 percent and the increased revenue will go toward infrastructure and education  projects.

WSFA 12 News was at the meeting Tuesday, and the one held Monday.

Business owners worry the increase will drive customers to other towns or even across the state line but Mayor Earl Johnson says the increase should not hurt the revenues of businesses in Andalusia.

"It doesn't happen out there across the state," Johnson said Monday night, "and I don't think it will happen here either."

The increase takes effect in July.

The Council voted to take a look at the issue again in two years.
