Local student earns National Young Marine of the Year award

ERLANGER, KY (FOX19) - Dakota Richter, a 17-year-old Dixie Heights High School junior, earned the title of 2013-14 National Young Marine of the Year.

Last weekend, 400 Young Marine Adult volunteers gathered at the Young Marines Adult Leaders conference in Reno, NV.

YM/SgtMaj Richter will be representing the Young Marines as ambassador and mentor for the program. She will be traveling nationally and internationally, to meet with Young Marines in various units in order to better herself as an advocate for them. She will also work alongside the Marine Corps League and the Board of Directors to help promote the Young Marines program.

Selection was based on their YM career, YM awards, academic standing, achievements both in and out of YMs, a "What Being Young Marine of the Year Would Mean to Me" essay and an Oral Board comprised of Division Commanders, National Executive Director and the 2012-13 National Young Marine of the Year. D

Richter is the first Young Marine from Kentucky to earn the National Title.
