Grilling safety tips for Memorial Day weekend

(FOX19) -

As many prepare for Memorial Day weekend activities, officials are sending a friendly reminder to use caution when cooking with outdoor grills and barbecues.

According to the Ohio State Fire Marshal, grills accounted for 130 fires and three injuries in 2012. In addition, over half of all outdoor grill fires occur between the months of May and August.

As a result, fire officials suggest the following safety tips:

  • All propane and charcoal barbecue grills should be used outdoors to avoid fire hazards and toxic gases.
  • Place the grill away from siding and deck railings. Don't store a grill under a porch or balcony.
  • Before using a gas grill, check the connection between the propane tank and fuel line.
  • Wear well-fitted clothing when grilling.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid.
  • Supervise children around outdoor grills. Establish a three-foot 'safety zone' around the grill to keep both children and pets at a distance.
  • Dispose of charcoal coals only after they are cool. Empty the coals into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in the tray before the grill.
  • Never leave a grill unattended.

In addition, have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
