TN officers to check for boating safety this holiday weekend

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The summer boating season is about to set sail, but before you head to the lake, there are some things you should know.

Officers with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency have some new technology to make sure everyone plays it safe on the water, and some of it is so small, you may not even notice it until it's too late.

"We want to make sure every boat has the proper equipment," said TWRA Officer Nick Luper.

There are a few things everyone must have on their boat: life jackets for every person on board, a fire extinguisher and a throwable floating device.

Officers will be out checking to make sure everyone is staying safe, especially during the busy Memorial Day weekend.

"That's what we're trying to do: we're trying to be a deterrent for anything that might be going on illegally out on the water and try to cut down on those accidents," Luper said.

Those who are caught breaking the rules could also get caught on camera. The officers will be wearing pen-sized cameras on the fronts of their shirts.

"It's new equipment we're getting that the agency is providing for us. It's a tool while we're out here working and inspecting these boats. There's some things going on that definitely for court-purposes we're going to need video," Luper said.

Alcohol and drugs are high on the list. There have already been nine boating-related deaths this year in Tennessee, which is two more than by this time last year, and boating season hasn't even begun.

Officers will also checking to make sure boat operators have the proper licensing. If you were born after Jan 1, 1989, you must have a proper boating license to operate a boat in Tennessee.
