Florence holds 'Olympics' in support of local military unit

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The City of Florence welcomed more than 100 active duty soldiers to town for 2013 Memorial Day Weekend.

Nearly a decade ago, the City of Florence adopted Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team "STRIKE", 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) - also known as 'The Renegades'.

It began at the start of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the city continued to support them throughout their deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. A total of 13 soldiers from the unit have been killed in action during that time.

Over the holiday weekend, Florence invited approximately 100 active duty soldiers from the unit to take part in the Renegade Olympics and Memorial Day Parade.

On Sunday, several Olympic-style games were held with Northern Kentucky residents, including a 5K Run/Walk, a boot camp, golf scramble, a 4x4 basketball tournament and a softball tournament.

The Renegades will also be honored during the annual Memorial Day Parade & Program on Monday.

The soldiers are all based out of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. All of their expenses are paid through contributions.
