Boy, 14, goes on joy ride, crashes into LaVergne home

LA VERGNE, TN (WSMV) -

A 14-year-old LaVergne boy stole his mother's car and crashed into a home, causing both the house and vehicle to catch fire.

Police said the car burst into flames when the boy drove it into the patio of a home on Greenfield Drive around midnight.

The sound of the crash woke up a neighbor, Mike Johnson, who came running outside to help.

"He was very disoriented from the airbags going off, so I knew to get him out of there quickly. That was the top priority," said Johnson.  "We pulled the boy out and drug him through the yard and our neighbors called 911."

Firefighters said if Johnson got to the teen just a few seconds later, the boy would've been severely burned or killed.

The home he crashed into caught fire, causing damage to the front and attic and cracking the structure. Five people, including four children, were home at the time, but were not hurt.

"I ran out the back and got the family out.  Everyone is alright," said homeowner Rodney Green.

The house was knocked off its foundation and deemed uninhabitable.

The teen was charged with driving without a license, joyriding and violating curfew.  Police said they don't plan to file additional charges related to damage sustained to the home.

The teen was taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises.
