RICHMOND, KY (FOX19) -

A couple who is facing charges in connection with the death of a 1-year-old boy in Hillsboro waived extradition on Monday.

Whitney Johnson, 26, and Nathan Ritze, 25, appeared in Madison County District Court in Kentucky. The couple is facing charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence in the death of Johnson's son, Garin Niehaus, whose remains were found Friday in a wooded area of Hillsboro.

According to Hillsboro police, a call was made Thursday to Richmond police concerning a suspicious death of a child and the welfare of 2 other children in the same home.

Niehaus' whereabouts had been unknown to other family members and his father since December.

Investigators say Johnson had moved from Hillsboro to Richmond to live with Ritze.

A court date for the couple in Highland County has not been set.
