The home, located in the 1900 block of Maple Avenue, developed the sinkhole because of problems with the sewer system.
Officials say rain water on Thursday overloaded the sewer system, causing a literal torrent of water to gush out of the basement windows, flowing behind the house into the neighbor's backyard.
It's not clear how long it will take the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) to fix the problem.
"We had about an inch of rain fall in about 15 minutes at this very location, so that was essentially storm water ponding at this low point in the street that couldn't get through the collapsed pipe," explained MSD Superintendent Mike Pittinger.
According to Pittinger, the collapsed pipe can only be fixed after the house with the sinkhole is torn down. However, he did point out that work completed since the development of the sinkhole seems to have worked.
"The previous work that we did made sure that the sanitary sewer on the street didn't back up into the houses," said Pittinger.
Justice Munoz who moved out the house the day the sinkhole developed says the flooding comes as no surprise.
"I figured it was going to happen again because they only did a little bit of work, and it's been raining like it was, and it's going to keep coming. It's already flooding now," said Munoz.
Jay Noble lives next door and had a river running through his backyard.
Nobel revealed, "I've lived in this house 30 years, and I've lived on this street for 50, and that's the worst I've ever seen it."
Water got into the apartment building across the street where residents like Allyce Jones got a rude awakening.
"It came down like Niagara Falls. We were like in there asleep, and we heard the rain come down, and it was flooding," said Jones.
Once the rain finally stopped and the water level went down, residents living on the bottom floor of the Maple Avenue Apartments say it'll be three or four days before their apartments dry out.
However, they're also willing to bet they'll be flooded again during the next heavy rainfall.
MSD officials say they hope to replace the collapsed sewer pipe now, before purchasing the house with the sinkhole, which could take months.
