Former Cincinnati Mayor Eugene Ruehlmann, who helped develop a stadium home for the Reds baseball team and Bengals football team, has died. He was 88.

Hamilton County GOP chairman Alex Triantafilou says the former county Republican Party chairman known as "Clean Gene" died Saturday. Triantafilou received word from Ruehlmann's family, but didn't immediately have other information to release.

Ruehlmann was a longtime city councilman and served as mayor from 1967 to 1971. He was known for the development of a new Fountain Square plaza and of Riverfront Stadium, which was demolished in 2002.
