Covington Commissioner's criminal record under investigation

COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

A Covington City Commissioner is under investigation to see whether or not she is 'legally' holding office, FOX19 confirmed on Tuesday.

Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmonson tells FOX19 that Michelle Williams, who took office in January, is being investigated for her criminal record.

According to Edmonson, she was convicted in a 1988 Virginia Military Court and was dishonorably discharged for theft. She was charged with a 2008 misdemeanor theft in Boone County, and in 2010, she was charged with misdemeanor drug possession in Kenton County.

The Kentucky Constitution states that anyone convicted of a felony or high misdemeanor cannot hold public office in the Commonwealth.

Both Williams and her lawyer declined to comment at Tuesday evening's budget meeting.

If these charges are true, then Williams' seat would have to be vacated.
