State Highway 10 in Macon County is known for its numerous crashes. The road follows the path of a deep, dangerous ravine.
When Rebecca Likens traveled the highway in the family sport-utility vehicle on June 4, she didn't realize she would have to make a split-second decision to avoid an oncoming car that veered in her lane.
Likens had her two young daughters and her 18-month-old granddaughter in the car with her.
"All I could think about was get of its way and not hit it head-on. It would have killed me and my kids," said Likens.
Likens turned the wheel toward the left. That's when the SUV plunged 250 feet down the steep ravine. Everyone in the car was wearing their seatbelts. When the car finally came to a stop, Likens was dazed and injured, but her first concern was for the children in the car
"I got them out of the car immediately. I was really concerned that the car would explode," said Likens.
Likens' husband Donnie was working on a house about two miles away with family when his brother got a call from Rebecca Linkens.
"My brother called 911. We were driving through here with my door open hollering for them. I finally heard them screaming from the bottom of the ravine.
Donnie Likens and his son scaled the dangerous ravine and reached the vehicle.
"I jumped the guard rail and saw the car. I went down there as fast as I could," said Donnie Likens.
Amazingly, the toddler didn't have a scratch on her. One of the girls suffered minor injuries, but Likens and her other daughter were badly hurt. They were both taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center but later released.
Rebecca Likens hasn't seen the badly damaged car until Wednesday. What she saw disturbed her.
"I haven't seen it until now. My first reaction was 'Oh my God.'" But I know I had God with me. Because the way that car looks, I don't think anyone would have survived," said Likens.
Rebecca Likens said she always makes her children put on their seatbelts before she starts the car and that is what probably saved their lives.
She said she has no intention of driving Highway 10 again.
