VASSAR, MI (WNEM) -

What was initially thought to be police searching for stolen guns was actually a search for a stolen boat and backhoe.

The Tuscola County Sheriff's Department said they unearthed a boat, all 26-feet of it, at a residence on Caine Road in the Vassar area.

The Tuscola County Sheriff's office was following a tip that someone had been stealing large construction equipment.

Tuscola County Sheriff's Department Detective Scott Jones said, "The boat was actually buried on this property. The information that was given to us was that the backhoe that we recovered down there was actually used to bury the boat, to conceal it."

Detective Jones said the property owner is not a person of interest in this case.

Authorities told TV5 the boat may have been stolen out of the Reed City area. Police said the backhoe is from Saginaw County, where both the boat and heavy equipment were stolen sometime last year.

Detectives with the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office provided WNEM.com with the two photos to the right.

Police do have a person of interest in this case and that person is currently in custody.
