Ohio treasurer wants to put state 'checkbook' online

(FOX19) - Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel wants to make state spending more transparent for taxpayers by putting the state's checkbook online.

The initiative calls for a database on the State Treasurer of Ohio website, allowing Ohio residents to see how their money is being spent.

"I think when we shine a spotlight on government spending and give citizens the ability to see how money is being spent, it will make government more efficient and it will give bureaucrats and public officials the chance to think twice before they do anything that might defraud taxpayers or just waste tax money," Mandel told FOX19 on Tuesday.

Ohioans would have free access to the information.

Mandel said he thinks the initiative could be done with existing staff and within his current budget.
