NORTH COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) - The family of a North College Hill man has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit and wrongful death suit against the City of North College Hill and one of its police officers.
The suit alleges that Corey McGinnis was unreasonably tased by Sgt. Ryan Schrand on June 26, 2012 following an altercation during a basketball game.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for McGinnis' eight children and hope the lawsuit will help reform taser policies.
The suit alleges that the taser used by Sgt. Schrand was not properly maintained and the voltage and current output for the unit exceeded manufacturer specifications. McGinnis' family also claims the tasing occurred more than two years after the manufacturer warned law enforcement agencies to avoid tasing the upper chest.
"We hope agencies across the region will recognize the dangers posed by chest shots and stop this dangerous practice immediately," said Al Gerhardstein, one of the attorneys representing the family.
