Man in court after attacking officer, getting shot

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A Miami, Florida man was in court on Monday morning after he allegedly attacked a Cincinnati Police officer, and was then shot.

Authorities say that Sgt. Brian Norris was ambushed by 32-year-old Ever Altamirano on Sunday morning near the old Harmony School on Summit Road in Roselawn.

Police say that Norris was patrolling the area around 5:00 a.m. due to a recent string of break ins at a nearby auto repair shop. As he was patrolling in his cruiser, Norris heard a noise and got out of his vehicle to investigate.

As Norris got out of his vehicle, police say he was ambushed by Altamirano. As the two struggled, Norris fired several shots. One of the shots grazed Altamirano in the leg.

The suspect ran away after the altercation.

Police called canine units to assist in finding the injured suspect. Springfield Township canine units were able to locate the suspect hiding in the brush nearby. The dog bit the suspect on his uninjured leg.

Altamirano was taken to the hospital, treated for his wounds and released to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

He was in court on Monday morning and had his bond set at $12,500 on charges of assault and robbery.

Lt. Col. Dave Bailey wonders if substance use could have influenced the suspect.

The incident is currently under investigation.
