CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A local doctor was sentenced to prison for selling painkillers to addicts.

Dr. Samuel Nigro, 76, will serve 9 months behind bars. He must pay $50K remaining from his $250K fine, too.

Dr. Nigro apologized in court, but the judge felt that he was not forthcoming with taking responsibly. Judge Pamela Barker said she felt Dr. Nigro left an impact on the community by distributing such addictive drugs.

Between June 17, 2008, and April 1, 2012, Dr. Nigro, prescribed drugs (mainly painkillers) illegally. Dr. Nigro had business offices in Lakewood, Beachwood, and his home office on Guilford Road in Cleveland Heights. Detectives from the Cleveland Police Department along with agents from the Ohio Pharmacy Board began receiving information from several pharmacists and former patients of Dr. Nigro that he was prescribing large doses of pain medication. Several patients of Dr. Nigro, who is a psychiatrist, were prescribed large doses of pain medications at the patients' request with no medical treatment or testing. Dr. Nigro would then receive cash payments of $100 to $200 per visit from the patients.

On April 18, Dr. Nigro plead guilty to one count of attempted engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, one count of tampering with drugs, four counts of trafficking offenses and two counts of attempted trafficking offenses.
