Renovations underway at Maloney High School in Meriden

MERIDEN, CT (WFSB) -

After years of talking about it, construction at Maloney High School is underway.

A ground breaking ceremony took place near the current high school Thursday afternoon.

The school has been showing signs for years that it needs help. From cracks in walls to leaky roofs, but that's all changing starting Thursday.

"The occasional leaky roof, the bucket in the middle of the hall make it a little uncomfortable," said student Francesca.

The shovels were put in the ground Thursday to begin the 107 point $5 million renovation project, but it will be another four years before it is completed.

Most of the building will be renovated as new, and one side will have this brand new wing with a bridge to it.

"I'm excited for next year, to see how the new wing is getting started, to see how it's going to be," said student Lindsay Pytel. "It's going to be different."

It was about five years ago when school officials started talking about rebuilding Maloney.

Two homes next to Maloney are being ripped down as part of the project, to make room mainly for the construction equipment, since the school is being renovated while school is in session over the coming years.

The project is using many local residents. John Muli, who went to Maloney and still lives in Meriden, was the first construction worker hired.

"I look forward to coming here just knowing I went here with all my friends and stuff," Muli said. "It means a lot."
