Phoenix firefighter hospitalized

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix firefighters worked into the evening to fight an out of control mulch fire, but they were also battling the year's hottest temperatures.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital after suffering from a heat-related illness. A spokesman says he was not expected to remain there overnight.

With scorching temperatures, Phoenix firefighters deploy support crews to assist with keeping those on the front lines hydrated.

"There's a whole bunch of people over there dying of thirst!" yells one firefighter to another as he drives away with an ice chest full of bottled water.

"We do that all summer long," said Phoenix Fire Department Capt. David DeLisa when asked if crews cross their fingers they won't be deployed in the middle of the day. "We don't want to be out in the middle of the heat."

Support crews spent the afternoon chopping up ice and loading up coolers with cold drinks.

"Ice, water, Powerade, stuff like that," said DeLisa.

DeLisa orders the younger crews to pace themselves.

"I told them 'take your time. Walk back there slowly,'" he said.

The firefighter who was treated and transported to the hospital was part of the first engine company that responded.

A spokesman says he worked for 2 1/2 hours before his reinforcements arrived.
