LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Cleanup continues at an abandoned cemetery that hasn't been properly maintained since the 1980s.

In May, WAVE 3 News exposed the dilapidated and unkempt conditions at Greenwood Cemetery at 41st Street and Hale Avenue in Louisville's Chickasaw neighborhood. Since then, youth league teams, neighbors and people whose family members are buried there continue their commitment to clean up the property. Dozens dropped by Saturday to help landscape, mow and rake overgrown grass clippings.

"Each and every one of us out here today have loved ones here. We want to make sure these people are resting in peace," said Neal Robertson. He's leading the charge to change how Greenwood Cemetery is maintained. Robertson and several other people recently met with personnel from the Kentucky Attorney General's office.

"We really never got a clear understanding of who was really running it. They said it's an abandoned property, and that's it," Robertson said.

A World War II veteran's grave site would be overgrown if it weren't for volunteers. "That's my dad's tombstone, Everett Williams," said Brenda Williams. She spent the morning with west Louisville's Yellow Jackets football team.

"I think its fun to help other people and their families," said player Demetrius Fant.

Several other local organizations and businesses, including the West End Cemetery Association and Ace Hardware, donated resources.

Dismas Charities has also offered to provide maintenance work, but the nearly 22-acre property requires constant upkeep.

"We're going to be here as much as we can to take care of our loved ones here in this grave site," Robertson said.
