BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -
Dozens of police officers had their guns drawn as they moved through a Williamson County high school Tuesday. Fortunately, it was only a training exercise, but it's training the officers say is some of the most important they'll do in their careers.
All hands were on deck at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood as officers responded to a pretend call of a shooter inside the school.
For the volunteers who took part, it felt all too real.
"There were gunshots. There were cell phones going off left and right," one volunteer said.
While the training session focused a lot on what was going on inside the school, it didn't end there.
"Today's exercise, we're expanding that and taking it to new level," said Brentwood police Chief Jeff Hughes. "We've called into a lot of other agencies, and once the threat's been utilized, the scenario will not stop."
Medical personnel were on the scene, taking volunteer victims to the hospital, where emergency room doctors and nurses were waiting.
"We know that you resort to your training, so the more we train for situations like this the better we'll be at responding to them," Hughes said.
It's training these officers hope they never have to use in real life.
"Unfortunately, in today's society, with what we see all over the country, it's become important and necessary for us to train for situations like this," Hughes said.
Franklin police, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and the FBI also took part in the training exercise.
