CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Commuting around Great American Ball Park will be a bit more tricky. Several road, lane, and sidewalk closures are set to take effect on Monday.

Soon a pedestrian bridge and a new parking lot will be the newest addition to a growing downtown Cincinnati, but the construction comes first.

At 9 a.m. Monday morning, Pete Rose Way between Broadway and Johnny Bench Way will be closed for all of next week. The following week just the center lanes and the north sidewalk will be closed until early August.

"It's trying to get people where they need to go, so if they're going to the Reds game or continuing over to the Banks," said Jared McFaddin, a senior engineer with the City of Cincinnati.

A heads up for pedestrians, starting Monday between Third and Pete Rose Way one lane of traffic and the sidewalk leading towards Great American Ball Park will be closed for four weeks.

One event likely to bring thousands of people downtown this month is the Macy's Music Festival. Executive Director Joe Santangelo is confident the construction won't get in the way.

"I think that there really shouldn't be a problem. Like I said, there's tons of parking and fortunately, I love the Cincinnati Reds, don't get me wrong, but they're out of town so that helps," said Santangelo.

McFaddin says all this construction will make commuting downtown more convenient.

"There is tub girder or basically a bridge that connects over the plaza level for US Bank and for Great American Ball Park and with that we'll be putting in, I believe, a 125-space parking lot," he explained.

Santangelo says he's thrilled to see such progress in places like the Banks because it's one reason they're expecting their biggest crowd ever, with more than 60,000 people.

"It's such a great place to come downtown Cincinnati. If you compare ten years ago or so versus now, forget it. It's night and day," said McFaddin.

The city says they strategically planned to do this project in July because the Reds are only in town one weekend in July while the closures are in effect.

The following areas will be affected:

  • Pete Rose Way between Broadway and Johnny Bench Way will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. Monday, July 8 until Friday, July 12 at 6 p.m.
  • Center lanes and the north sidewalk on Pete Rose Way between Broadway and Johnny Bench Way will be closed beginning 9 a.m. Monday, July 8 until early August; south sidewalk and one lane in each direction (at minimum) will remain open.
  • Sidewalks and one lane of traffic on the southwest corner of Third & Broadway (between Third and Pete Rose Way) will close at 9 a.m. Monday, July 8 for four weeks.
  • Race Street south of Freedom Way and parking Lot D (below) will incur removal and repair work, without major disruption of traffic. The south curb lane on Freedom Way may be closed on July 8 and July 9.

This entire project is expected to be completed by October.
