MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) -

A 7-year-old boy has died from his injuries after police say he was struck in the head by a random bullet on his way to watch fireworks in Brandermill.

Brendon Mackey was walking through the parking lot of the Boathouse with his dad around 9 p.m. Thursday to watch the fireworks. Brendon started to lag behind, then suddenly fell.

"I thought he had fell, maybe hit his head, so I went to pick him up…" he couldn't finish the sentence before breaking down into tears.

His father, Ryan Mackey, thought he had passed out, but soon found a bullet wound to his head, according to police.

"I had him in my arms," says Bryan as he described holding his dying son, Brendon.  "When I had him in my hands, I looked at his face and I knew he wasn't there.  I could see it in his eyes, that blank look in his face."

"Blood was coming out of his nose and from the top of the head from the bullet wound," says Marie Harris, Brendon's mother.

Brendon was rushed to VCU Medical Center where doctors tried to save his life. The family says the boy died around 11 a.m. on Friday.

"He was a very loving child. He loved to make people laugh, that was his main thing," says Harris.

Brendon was going to be in 3rd grade at C. E. Curtis Elementary in Chester. He was a student at Hopkins Elementary in Chesterfield this past school year. His parents say he loved golf and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Brendon was also with his cousin and aunt when the shooting happened. Funeral plans have not yet been set.

Police aren't sure who fired the shot. They believe someone in the area was firing a gun in the air to celebrate the 4th of July and the stray bullet came down and hit the child.

Anyone with information about someone firing a gun within a 5-mile radius of Swift Creek Reservoir is asked to call Chesterfield Police call 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660 or www.crimesolvers.net.
