Mariemont officers honored for saving swimmer

Two Mariemont Police officers were honored on Monday night for saving a swimmer from the Little Miami River.

Deputy Nick Hoevel and Mariemont Lieutenant Tom Ostendarp were given an Award of Merit for Valor during the Mariemont Council meeting.

On June 11, both officers were dispatched to a report of possible drowning in the Little Miami River.  When officers arrived at the river bank, they were told two people were still in the water that needed assistance.

One swimmer was spotted hanging from a rope, both officers removed gun belts, entered the water and managed to assist the one swimmer back to safety.

The second swimmer, Otis Andrews, was unable to be rescued and is presumed to have been swept away.
