BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -
Two teenagers are behind bars after burglaries were reported in the evacuation zone near the giant Louisiana sinkhole in Bayou Corne, LA.
Residents reported several items missing: jewelry, electronics, food and miscellaneous yard items.
A concerned citizen contacted the Sheriff's Office and stated that she had received property that she felt may have been stolen.
Deputies were able to track down several different residents and were able to verify that the items were in fact stolen. The investigation led to the residence of two teenagers who live in the same neighborhood.
A search warrant was executed at the residence and two arrests were made. Billy Gros, 18, was arrested and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center and a 14 year old juvenile was arrested and booked into Assumption Parish's new Youth Detention Center.
The burglaries remain under investigation and detectives are trying to determine if these individual are responsible for other crimes in the area.
It has been 10 months since hundreds living near the giant sinkhole were forced from their homes.
Bubbles were spotted in Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou in June 2012. Two months later, the ground opened up.
Most affected residents began receiving weekly checks from Texas-Brine in the amount of $875 per week.
Nine months after the sinkhole first appeared in Bayou Corne, Texas
Brine began making offers to buy out the residents living there. Forty four of the 92 buyout offers were accepted by residents near the giant Louisiana sinkhole.
