Cincinnati Gardens up for sale; future uncertain

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - One of the most historic sports venues in Cincinnati is up for sale and could be in danger.

Kenko Corporation, owner of the Cincinnati Gardens since 1979, announced this week it would sell the building and its 20 acres.

The President of the Cincinnati Gardens said the hope is the new buyer will keep operating the building, but there is a possibility the new buyer could tear the building down.

"You don't know.  You find out along the way," said Pete Robinson.  "We're going to give this every opportunity, and the reason we are marketing it like this, to see if someone who will come out and have the same passion and the same drive that our company has had for the past 35 years to conduct sports and entertainment.  In terms of developers and investors, certainly, we'll have to evaluate those opportunities as well, but we're going to give it every chance to continue as it is."

The Gardens currently is home to amateur hockey and roller derby.  Built in 1949, it's been home to the NBA, UC and Xavier basketball, professional hockey and concerts, including, the Jackson Five, the Beatles and Elvis.
