Suspect who confessed to dozens of murders appears in court

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Judge Angela Terry denied bond late Wednesday afternoon for a man charged with a Lawrence County murder, who told investigators he was responsible for dozens more.

Jose Manuel Martinez is charged with killing Jose Ruiz in Lawrence County in March. Investigators said Martinez shot Ruiz in retaliation for insults made against Martinez's family.

Wednesday, investigators and District Attorney Errek Jett presented their case for probable cause, asking the judge to deny bond.

Martinez was arrested by police in Yuma, Arizona, as he tried to enter the United States from Mexico. After being charged with the Ruiz murder, he reportedly told authorities he had also committed more than thirty murders in a least ten states.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell said while authorities in Lawrence County build a case in the Ruiz murder, they are also talking with investigators outside of Alabama. Jett asked the judge to deny bond, saying Martinez is too dangerous to be free and because he has ties to Mexico that make him a flight risk.

Sheriff Mitchell said Martinez told investigators the number of victims he has killed is somewhere in the thirties, many of them as a paid contract killer for Mexican drug cartels.

"He's given us a lot of stuff to check out in the way of murders and that kind of thing. He's given us more stuff there to check out, and we're looking into it. We'll verify it. We'll verify which state it's in, which jurisdiction it would come up in, and we'll notify that state," Mitchell said.

The case will now go before a grand jury.
